How to use Google Music Beta from outside the US

works for Linux, Windows, Mac, iOS and Android:

googles music store & storage allows you to upload 20’000 music files to their servers (cloud). But the services is restricted to US IP only. But with a little service called RaptorVPN it is possible to have access to the music store. Once registered, you can use it from everywhere

Instructions

  • You need a google account (create one here if you don’t have one already)
  • You need to create an account on RaptorVPN . It is free but has limited bandwith available, you wont be able to stream videos but for the initial setup of your google music account it is perfectly sufficient.

Instructions for Linux (Ubuntu)

sudo apt-get install network-manager-pptp network-manager-pptp-gnome

in the network-manager select: add new vpn, select pptp and add the settings like on this screen shot

Instructions for Android

  • Menu -> Settings -> Wireless & Network -> VPN Settings-> Add VPN -> Add L2TP/IPSec PSK VPN
  • Name: RaptorVPN US
  • Set VPN server: l2tp.spotflux.com
  • Set IPSec pre-shared key: raptor
  • Username & Password from your subscription

download the software from Raptorvpn and install it. Use your account credentials from the raptor account to login

Setup of Google Music & Google Music Manager

register online

  • Launch the Raptor VPN and go to the google music page
  • Now login with your google account
  • you can disconnect the vpn service. it should now work without it!
  • Download the google music manager to your computer if you wish to upload your music library to google music

Setup on your mobile:

  • connect the vpn and download the google music app from the market
  • login and see your library
  • you will not need to connect the vpn in the future

BTW: you can use the vpn to access any web service which requires a us ip to work

How to connect to the unibe using the network-manager and vpnc plugin

  • install the network management framework (VPNC plugin) from synptics
    then complete the dialog as in the screenshot below.
  • grab the information from the vpn profile of the university of bern (VPN2Unibe.pcf) and open it with a text editor
  • use this link group password decoderto decrypt the group password line. (look for !enc_GroupPwd=********************)

you need to have a rooted phone: search google for your phone and rooted. For HTC use this page here: unrevoked.

Here we go:

- Download the VPN Connections for the market (this software needs superuser rights to be installed and this is why your android has to be rooted)

- grab the information from the vpn profile of the university of bern (VPN2Unibe.pcf) (follow this link) and open it with a text editor.

Open VPN Connection on the android and add new network and fill the informations requested:

Connection Name: Give any name (Vpn2Unibe)

IPSec gateway address: vpn01.unibe.ch

IPSecID : Everyone

IPSecSecret: use this link to decrypt the group password line. (look for !enc_GroupPwd=********************)

Username: your campus username

Password: your campus password
